Iglesia de San Pedro Claver: A Relic of Cartagena's Slave Days
San Pedro Claver was a Jesuit priest and missionary who spent much of his life ministering to Cartagena's slave population. It's estimated that he baptized over 300,000 slaves during his 40 years of ministry—a ministry that often put Claver odds with his fellow Jesuits, who accepted slavery and the social hierarchy of the day.

Claver received sainthood for his work, and today you can see his remains in the church that bears his name. Built in the 17th century, the Baroque structure features a beautiful stone façade, stained-glass windows, and an altar made of Italian marble. Claver's coffin is embedded in the altar, and you can also visit the tiny room where he slept.
The Iglesia de San Pedro Claver is located in the Walled City in the El Centro neighborhood. It is open Monday through Saturday from 6:45 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.
